Profile In Brief
[dropcap2]W[/dropcap2]ith an estimates of 75 TCF gas reserves offshore along the Malaysian coast region, a wide range of industrial opportunities may become prominence. Malaysia has entered the Gas Era with the implementation of the PETRONAS owned Peninsular Gas Utilisation Project (PGU) in 1984, which benefits the residential, combustion and industrial sectors. The Malaysian government four-fuel policy also gives a momentum to increase the usage of natural gas. The result of growing gas utilization is the development of private companies and legal bodies which are directly involved in this industry.
[dropcap2]C[/dropcap2]urrently, the number of institutions offering professional training, research entity and technical services in the gas industry is limited by numbers, thus the existence of organisation responsible for coordinating and implementing the technical needs is highly required.
[dropcap2]B[/dropcap2]Based on the aforementioned statement, UTM has taken the lead to form the GAS TECHNOLOGY CENTRE (GASTEG) to become the coordination centre for the local and international professionals in the gas industry. GASTEG was established and officially launched on the 2nd July 1997 by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Mustafa Mohamed. In the spirit of the establishment, GASTEG is responsible to plan various activities with regard to the gas industry. Being a centre of excellence it is it’s duty to gather specialists from UTM, industry to comprehend gas knowledges and experiences.
